Why is My Refrigerator Not Cooling?

When your refrigerator is not cold, it is time to see what the problem is. Often times it’s something as basic as a routine coil cleaning. However, with these new fridges, they’re equipped with a variety of sensors too.

Before we look too deep, we look at the most typical and easy causes for this issue. Here are a few of of the things that we have found can lead to a refrigerator that will not cool:

Is the cord plugged in? This may seem like a silly question, but we have been called out to jobs that this was the problem. Somehow, the refrigerator was not plugged in. Maybe a a pet unplugged it, or an electrician doing a service visit. Whatever the case might be, be sure it is plugged in.

Check the thermostat inside. This is a typical problem for customers with small children in their home. After all, kids like dials and buttons and so, without knowing they’re doing anything bad, they mess with them. So, check that the thermostat setting isn’t the cause of the warm fridge.

Refrigerator Components to Troubleshoot?

Be sure each of the vents inside of the freezer area aren’t blocked with boxes or food. This is common since sometimes bags of frozen veggies get jammed in the back. There might be food in the very back of a freezer that has been forgotten.

Be sure the refrigerator’s condenser cooling fan is clean and clear of all debris. To be sure, unplug the fridge and slide it away from the kitchen wall. The fan for many models is just at the bottom or in the back part of the freezer section. Often times, customers don’t think to clean this area of the fridge. But, it is important to clean it. And, it builds up with dust and fuzz quickly, especially with homes that have pets. So, get a rag and get the collected dust out of the refrigerator coils and fan.

This is not recommended for refrigerators that have a back coil system. Once all clean, plug it back into the outlet and monitor if the fan spins.

The Freezer Unit is Cold but the Refrigerator Isn’t

There are many reasons for a refrigerator that won’t cool after these more common ones to take a look at if your freezer is cool but the fridge is not. The evaporator coils are frosted over. This occurs if there’s a failure in the defrost heating system. Or the automatic defrost experiences an issue. The evaporator fan motor is another cause.

Every refrigerator has a pair of evaporator coils. These coils are what cool and the fan circulates the cold air throughout the unit. The damper control assembly isn’t working the right way. The temperature control board which provides the electricity to the compressor and fan, this isn’t likely the issue but it is worth mentioning.

And, the thermistor might be defective, which is a tiny sensor in the unit that tells the temperature. Having one of our repairmen look at it is the best course of action but these are a few of of the most common issues.
